22 Bishopsgate & Zinc: Incident Management at Scale

Zinc Systems

How Zinc powers critical incident management at 22 Bishopsgate. One of the UK’s most iconic towers.

Connected buildings. Informed teams. Controlled operations.

Overview

22 Bishopsgate is the tallest building in the City of London. Itโ€™s a landmark โ€œvertical villageโ€ where over 12,000 people work, meet and move through shared spaces every single day. A million square feet of commercial office space sits alongside 200,000 sq ft of amenity areas, hospitality, retail and public-facing zones, including Horizon 22, the UK’s highest free public viewing gallery, and Gordon Ramsey’s four dining experiences.

At this scale and profile, safety and security cannot be improvised. When youโ€™re responsible for this many people, in this many spaces, with this much at stake, you need systems that work when it matters most. Thatโ€™s why 22 Bishopsgate chose Zinc as their Incident and Risk Management platform. Not just to manage incidents. To control every element of risk and disruption.

The Challenge

Being one of the most recognisable addresses in Europe comes with responsibility. 22 Bishopsgateโ€™s prominence, density and mixed-use nature create a security environment unlike any other. Day-to-day operational incidents happen. So do rare, high-consequence events, terrorism, major medical emergencies, fire, civil unrest. The building has to be prepared for both.

The challenge wasnโ€™t just scale. It was fragmentation. The security team needed to solve several critical problems simultaneously:

  • Managing a complex, multi-use environment where every incident involved multiple teams, occupiers and often external agencies. Coordinating responses without confusion meant getting everyone working from the same information at the same time.
  • Ensuring rapid, accurate communication during fast-moving incidents. When seconds matter, manual processes create dangerous delays.
  • Maintaining provable compliance with evolving legislation, including the Terrorism Protection of Premises Bill (Martynโ€™s Law). Paperwork and disconnected systems donโ€™t cut it.
  • Eliminating information silos that were introducing risk exactly where risk couldnโ€™t be tolerated. Legacy tools werenโ€™t built for this level of operational complexity.

22 Bishopsgate needed a single system that could act as the operational backbone for every incident, every team and every scenario. One source of truth. Always current. Always accessible.

โ€œSecurity is paramount in such dynamic environments. Ensuring swift information dissemination, awareness, coordination and response is critical.โ€

The Solution

22 Bishopsgate partnered with Zinc to build a tailored Incident Management platform that reflected the buildingโ€™s unique risk profile, operational complexity and ambition to stay ahead of an unpredictable threat landscape. The platform was implemented in close collaboration with Smart Spaces, whose smart building and workplace experience technology acts as connective tissue across the buildingโ€™s digital infrastructure.

This partnership matters. Zinc delivers the incident management, response, communication and compliance framework. Smart Spaces links people, places and systems across the operational fabric of the building. Together, they ensure that incidents, whether raised by frontline teams, building systems or occupiers, flow directly into Zincโ€™s structured response workflows. No delay. No duplication. No gaps.

The platform consolidated capabilities that had previously been scattered across disconnected tools:

Zinc was configured not just for major emergencies, but for the full operational spectrum. Lift incidents. Medical emergencies. Unauthorised access. Hostile reconnaissance. Large-scale terrorist threats. Every scenario planned for. Every response structured. Nothing left to chance.

The system is aligned with recognised national frameworks including JESIP and the National Decision Model. That means the security team can make confident, defensible decisions under pressure, precisely when it matters most.

Implementation

Zinc was deployed as a core operational system within 22 Bishopsgateโ€™s Security Control Room. From day one, it was fully integrated into day-to-day operations. It had to be capable of scaling instantly to support the highest-impact scenarios the building might face. It is.

The implementation was comprehensive:

  • Emergency operating procedures and response plans were digitised, removing paper-based risk and ensuring consistency across every scenario.
  • Alerts, escalations and communications were automated based on incident severity, removing manual bottlenecks that slow response times.
  • Mobile reporting was enabled for frontline teams via the Zinc app, extending situational awareness across the entire building.
  • Patrol management, compliance tracking and audit workflows were brought into a single operational view.
  • Post-incident review and evidence collation workflows were structured to drive continuous improvement.

The platform was designed to evolve. As 22 Bishopsgate has grown, new amenity spaces, changing occupier profiles, a shifting threat landscape, Zinc has grown with it. The system adapts without compromising control, consistency or compliance.

The Results

With Zinc in place, 22 Bishopsgate now operates one of the most mature, data-driven security operations of any commercial building in the UK. The transformation is tangible.

Faster Incident ResponseAutomated workflows and real-time communications cut response times. Teams act the moment an incident is raised.
Unified Situational AwarenessA single operational picture across all teams and systems. No information silos. Everyone working from the same source of truth.
Built-in Compliance & AuditabilityStructured workflows and full audit trails support current regulatory requirements and position the building ahead of forthcoming legislation including Martynโ€™s Law.
Greater ResilienceThe building is prepared for the full spectrum of risk. Hostile reconnaissance. Medical emergencies. Terrorism. Everything in between.
Occupier ConfidenceWhen safety is visibly, consistently managed, occupiers, staff and visitors can focus on what theyโ€™re there to do.

Consolidating multiple functions into a single platform removed the complexity, duplication and hidden risk that characterises fragmented security operations. Safety and security are no longer reactive. Theyโ€™re proactive, evidence-based and embedded in how the building operates every day.

The integration with Smart Spaces delivers faster detection, clearer accountability and more coordinated response across the entire building lifecycle. From routine operations through to full emergency response, the building is prepared.

โ€œI would describe our relationship with Zinc as a partnership. The team have been exceptional in tailoring the product to our ever-evolving needs.โ€
