Coronavirus Disease
(COVID-19) Outbreak

What is a pandemic?
A pandemic is a global disease outbreak

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a pandemic is declared when a new disease for which people do not have immunity spreads around the world beyond expectations.

A pandemic isn't new to us, there are well documented outbreaks - HIV/AIDS is an example of one of the most destructive global pandemics in history (at its peak between 2005-2012), Hong Kong influenza killed 1 million people in 1968, Spanish influenza killed 40-50 million people in 1918, Asian influenza killed 2 million people in 1957 and smallpox, which throughout history, has killed between 300-500 million people in its 12,000 year existence.

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Everyone has heard of Coronavirus or COVID-19 by now. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It's caused by a virus called coronavirus. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

As each day passes, we hear new reports of how the virus is spreading, the impact around the world and what to expect going forward. The worry is not only health related, Covid-19 could potentially bankrupt more people than it will kill and inevitably collapse economies and the UK intelligence agency issued public warning about criminals exploiting outbreak to launch online attacks.

This resource hub has been setup to filter the relevant information, providing you with useful official resources to support your organisation during this moment of crisis.

Official Situational Intelligence

Synapse pulls data and situational dashboards from World Health Organisation (WHO) and the UK Government.

Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)

In addition to official sources, there are many unofficial data feeds avaialble for intelligence surrounding COVID-19. As an example, Reddit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members - a great example of crowdsourced intelligence from an engaged community of users that can support your organisation's descision making.

More data sources and curated data visualizations

Let’s help each other by building the resources necessary to fight this global problem. We believe the right data can help fuel decisiveness, confidence, and impact. We also believe that data helps ensure we’re basing decisions on facts, not fear.
